Is a DVLA code required to hire a car in the UK?
If you have a GB (not NI) driving licence and are renting a car in either the UK or Ireland, you will need to get a DVLA code allowing your car hire company to check your driving record.
This is easily obtained by visiting the DVLA website. Your driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode on your driving licence will be required to access your code. You can then use the code once over the next 21 days.
Within the UK or Ireland, you will usually be required to show your passport and additional proof of address (bank statement or utility bill less than 3 months old). Click on the 'View Terms' button when you are viewing vehicles or see your voucher looking under the Driving Licence and Identification sections for more information.
