Why we only ask for a small deposit when you book with Clarify
When you rent a car through the Clarify Car Hire website we only ask you for a small deposit, when many other brokers ask for full payment upfront. Why is this?
We don't think it is in our customers' best interests to take full payment upfront - and here are some of the reasons why.
Car hire is not a business which requires consumers' deposits to be protected - so if your car hire broker goes bust there is a good chance that your hire car contract will have been cancelled or you may be asked to pay again when you get to the desk. The way we work makes this impossible - as you will be paying the car hire company directly.
You get better service if they know you can walk away - if the car hire company knows you have already paid you are to a degree over a barrel. You cannot threaten to walk away without the risk of losing your whole payment. Our way means they will work harder to keep you happier. We are aware of one car firm (not one on our service!) who don't worry about the length of their queues as their prices assume that some people will walk away and go elsewhere, giving up their prepaid amount rather than spending two hours waiting to collect their car.
Why should we hold onto your money for months before you travel - it's your cash not ours - the main reason car hire take the payment upfront is so it improves their bank balance. Not fair as far as we are concerned.
However there are reasons that some people choose to pay up front - for instance they like to make sure they have put the money aside to stagger the holiday cost, or want to make sure they are locked into an exchange rate.
The first of these can of course be sorted by transferring the money into a savings account - you might even earn interest on the savings to fund a coffee or two at the airport. The second can be negated, if travelling to the US or a Eurozone country, by transferring the money onto a Prepaid Currency Card which will mean you lock in the currency rate that applies today.
Either way the money stays within your reach and protection until you collect your car - giving you the control - and is the reason we think our way of doing business is right for our customers.
