What price do car hire companies charge for fuel?
This depends on the rental agreement you have agreed to:
Full to Full or Same to Same - if the car hire firm has to add fuel to the car they tend to charge a higher rate which could be up to twice pump prices or charge pump prices plus a hefty service charge. Avoid forgetting to fill up your car before its return and keep the receipt when you have filled up so you can show it was filled locally to the car hire depot (car hire firms know you can run a car for 40 miles before the fuel gauge drops and watch out for it!).
Prepaid Tankful bought at the desk - You pay for a tankful on arrival - often at a penny or two less than pump prices. Seems generous, but the car hire firms know you will return the car with on average £10 of fuel still in it - you won't run the risk of running the car down below the red zone on the gauge!
Full to Empty or Full to Empty with refund - A deal you have signed up to when you booked the car - normally pump price plus up to 15% - expensive especially as you will leave petrol in the car on its return as above and if you get a refund it will be rounded down to the next eighth or quarter of a tankful. Finally the refund normally also entails a service charge of €15 - €40.
