Why Hiring an Automatic Can Make Light Work of Driving Abroad

What are the benefits of hiring an automatic car?

For some people, driving an automatic is what they are used to and they would therefore prefer to book an automatic when renting a car. For others, the thought of having to drive an automatic spikes fear and trepidation. Whichever form of gear transmission you are more comfortable driving, we can help.

Automatics are easy to drive – I can vouch for that, I’m a recent convert – and they can be a real plus when you are hiring a car in a foreign country.

Here’s a few reasons why…

No gears – One of the hardest parts of driving a car when it is on the ‘wrong’ side of the road is getting used to changing gears with your other hand. That is all done away with when you drive an automatic so you can focus on locating other important switches such as the indicators and windscreen wipers!

More choice - If you are open to either a manual or automatic you will have a greater range of vehicles to choose from. If you are hiring in the United States or Canada you are unlikely to be able to hire a manual at all so being open to an automatic will enable you to rent in these countries.

Smoother driving – An automatic means no going up and down the gears when you are driving through a city or having to keep your foot on the clutch when you are sitting in a traffic jam. On country roads automatics make hill starts a dream, doing away with stalling and rolling backwards.

Safe travel – with no gear changing, your hands can stay on the wheel giving you plenty of time to react to hazards and to navigate out of a situation quickly. Instead of worrying about changing gear with your other hand, you can keep your focus on the road around you.

Not used to driving an automatic? You could always set up a test drive with a garage before your hire starts. My top tip for new automatic drivers is to keep your left leg tucked behind your right when driving. This helps when approaching junctions and stops your left leg from trying to find the non-existent clutch!
