Will the car hire company ask for a credit card when I get to the desk?

When I get to the desk will the car hire company want a credit card?
No. With our debit card friendly hires you can use your debit card to pay for:
Reserving your car through Clarify Car Hire
Paying for your rental balance at the desk
Leaving the required security and any fuel deposit
You will not need a credit card.
What happens if the car hire company says that debit cards are only accepted if you take out one of their upgraded packages?
If these are the terms of the rental company then, when you select our debit card filter, only hires including the upgraded package will be offered. This often means that you have additional cover with your rental – an added bonus!
Can I use my phone to pay for a debit card car hire?
Car hire desks will expect a physical card in the name of the lead driver. You will not be able to use your phone with ApplePay for example. Always check the terms and conditions of your car hire prior to booking to ensure your debit card is one that is accepted by the rental company. Prepaid cards and top-up cards are not accepted.
Will the security deposit be blocked on my debit card in the same way as with a credit card?
In most cases debit cards cannot be pre-authorised so, when a security deposit is required, the amount is taken as a payment from your bank account. You will therefore need to ensure you have enough funds to cover this.
At the end of the hire, any refund due is processed by the car hire company but do bear in mind that, due to banking processes, it can take up to 30 days for that refund to be back in your account. If you would rather not leave a security deposit, you can use our no deposit filter when searching for car hire. This may still leave a fuel deposit but these are usually much smaller than a security deposit.
