Unforgettable Journeys Start with Car Rental in South Africa
Hiring a Car in South Africa - Where to Go and What to Consider
South Africa is one of the world’s great road-trip destinations. From dramatic coastlines and wine valleys to wildlife reserves and wide-open spaces, the country rewards travellers who explore beyond the cities. Hiring a car is often the best and sometimes the only way to see it properly.
It is easy to get a quote for car hire in South Africa with Clarify Car Hire and we are here to help.

Why Hire a Car in South Africa?
Public transport options for tourists are limited outside major cities, and organised tours rarely offer the freedom or flexibility many travellers want. A hire car allows you to set your own pace, detour to hidden gems, and reach more remote areas where the some of the best sights are often located. Most international visitors pick up cars at major airports such as Cape Town International, OR Tambo (Johannesburg), or King Shaka (Durban), and we can offer rentals in all of these locations.
Where You Might Want to Go
The Garden Route
One of South Africa’s most famous drives, the Garden Route stretches along the southern coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Taking in forests, lagoons, beaches, and charming towns like Knysna and Plettenberg Bay and with excellent roads, this makes an ideal trip for first-time visitors.
Cape Winelands
Just an hour from Cape Town, a tour of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl makes a perfect short road trip. A car gives you flexibility, but remember to plan responsibly if wine tasting, have a designated driver or better still choose accommodation at the vineyard!
Kruger National Park
For safari lovers, hiring a car to self-drive Kruger is a popular and affordable option. The park’s roads are well maintained, and getting to see these fantastic animals in their natural habitat is a memory to treasure. A higher-clearance vehicle is helpful but not essential inside the park.
The Drakensberg Mountains
This dramatic mountain range offers hiking, scenic drives, and quiet rural landscapes. If you are planning a route with a mountainous terrain you may want to consider a four wheel drive vehicle to make lighter work of the hills. Use our Drivetrain filter to narrow your search.
The Wild Coast and Northern Cape
These regions are often overlooked by visitors yet they offer raw beauty and fewer crowds. The local roads are often less well-maintained, there are limited fuel stops, and mobile signal can be patchy. A sturdy car and careful planning are essential and this may be a route better suited to those who have previous driving experience in this part of the world.
What to Consider When Hiring a Car in South Africa
Vehicle Choice
A small hatchback is fine for cities and major highways, but if you plan to visit national parks, drive long distances or visit rural areas, you may want to consider an SUV or a larger vehicle for your comfort. Four-wheel drive is usually unnecessary unless you’re heading into remote areas or into the mountains.
Insurance and Excess
This is one of the most important considerations. Rental rates often come with an insurance excess (the amount you pay if something goes wrong). With Clarify Car Hire we offer you the option to choose packages with a reduced excess liability or those with no excess. You may also opt for top up cover with your hire which can reimburse you if you are charged for the excess or for damage to the windscreen, tyres, undercarriage or roof.
Distances and Time
South Africa is vast. Distances between destinations can be longer than they appear on a map, and speed limits vary. Don’t underestimate driving times, especially on single-lane roads or in mountainous areas. While highways generally make for easy driving, using rural roads can lengthen your journey time as they may not be in such good condition.
Fuel and Refuelling
Fuel stations are common on major routes but can be sparse in remote regions. It’s wise to refuel whenever you have the chance outside cities. Also note that attendants usually pump fuel for you and it is customary to tip them a small amount. Make sure you factor in time to refuel before returning your car if you need to.
Cross Border Travel
If you plan to drive into neighbouring countries like Namibia, Botswana, or Eswatini, you must get prior approval. Please read the Cross Border section in the terms and conditions for any car hire package you are considering. Here you will find information about which countries you can enter and information about charges.
Hiring a car in South Africa opens up a world of unforgettable experiences. Take your time and enjoy the journey.
