Relaxing Cyprus - With over 300 days of sunshine every year, visitors to Cyprus are almost guaranteed warm weather. There were 64 beaches awarded a Blue Flag in 2017 putting Cyprus at the top of EU rankings for the 12th year in a row when it comes to clean beaches. There is also a very low crime rate on the island making it one of the safest countries to spend your holiday. So, put your feet up, relax and soak up the sun in Cyprus.
Exploring Cyprus – Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and, amongst the hills and coastline, there are many cycling and nature trails. A hike in the Akamas peninsula is the ideal escape for those who want to head away from the busier tourist parts of Cyprus. There are even climbing and orienteering routes. For underwater explorers, Cyprus boasts one of the top ten diving sites in the world, the wreck of the ferry Zenobia near Larnaca which sank in 1980.
Discovering Cyprus - The island has one of the oldest civilisations in the Mediterranean at over 10,000 years old. Not surprising then that it has the world’s oldest named wine still in production, Commandaria and that the oldest perfume was discovered by archaeologists in Pyrgos in 2007. Spend some time in Paphos, a World Heritage Site itself, to reveal the secrets within the Tombs of the Kings.
Enjoying Cyprus– Cyprus is a birdwatcher’s paradise. There are over 370 species of birds to be found here which includes flamingos! If you are more green-fingered then look out for the 20 species of rare orchids and the 140 varieties of flowering plants which are unique to Cyprus when you are out for a stroll. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a mouflon, a shy breed of sheep which is the country’s national animal.
Celebrating Cyprus – This island nation is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, and Cyprus is the perfect romantic location. The city of Limassol is the place to go for the traditional carnival in springtime. And for Cypriots, gathering together for mealtimes is part of their way of life, so Cyprus boasts some superb restaurants serving delicious local cuisine such as stifado or grilled halloumi. Watch out for the local drink, Zivania. It is so strong it is known as firewater!
Cyprus is a multi-faith, multi-lingual, multi-cultural country. It is also a divided country. If you are looking to travel with a hire car between North and South Cyprus use our unique filter on the Clarify Car Hire to identify car hire companies who will allow travel between the two countries.
