How to select your rental car with Clarify Car Hire
Our handy guide to finding your ideal hire car
When you are booking a rental car, you want to be sure that the car you end up with is one that is going to enable you to carry out the journeys you have planned, in relative comfort and at a cost you can afford.
At Clarify Car Hire our mission has always been to make the process of hiring a car as transparent as possible so that you, as our customer, will feel you have made the best possible choice of vehicle for whatever trip you have planned.
We start by asking the basic questions:
Your pick up location – if you are looking for a one way hire, then tick the box to say you will be dropping off in a different location
The dates and times you need – please allow time for getting through baggage claims and passport control on pick up and enough time before your flight on your return
Residence and age of the lead driver – the lead driver is the person who is going to be renting the car in their name and taking responsibility for it
Once you select the search button you will have results tailored to your answers.
Next – Choose the size of car
You can do this either by selecting the car group (with the smallest being the mini category), or by choosing the number of seats you require.
If you are doing any long distance driving you may wish to choose a slightly larger car for comfort. Also consider how many bags you are taking. If they will not all fit in the boot, you may need an extra seat for luggage. Are you using child car seats? Allow enough room if you have a large family.
Tailor your car hire
Using Clarify Car Hire’s filter system you can narrow your search down even further. Our filters can search for the following and more:
- Debit card car hire
- Automatics or manuals
- No deposit car hire
- No excess car hire
- Cars with winter tyres
Once you have selected your optional filters, you will see your results listed. Each option will be shown as in the example below.

Understanding Your Car Hire
In the information about the vehicle you have chosen we include what is known as the SIPP code. This can be seen on the left of the picture above. SIPP stands for Standard Interline Passenger Procedure and is a 4 letter code system recognised across all car hire brands which allows them to categorise cars.
Each letter denotes the following:
1st Letter – Size of car
2nd Letter – Number of doors or whether it is a specialist vehicle
3rd Letter – Transmission i.e. manual or automatic
4th Letter – Fuel type and air conditioning
In the example above EDMR stands for an economy sized car with 4-5 doors, a manual gearbox and a petrol or diesel car with air conditioning.
When you hire a car, it is normally on an ‘or similar’ basis which means the car hire company will usually provide you with a car with the same SIPP code. If they are unable to, they are likely to make you aware of the difference. Should your rental company not have a car in the size you required, they should offer you one from the next category up without any upgrade charge.
