Tips for Looking After Your Hire Car in Winter

When you rent a vehicle, you are expected to take care of it – just like you would if it were your own car. The winter climate can be harsh on cars so we have wrapped up a few tips to keep you safer on the roads and to help you return your rental car to the hire company in tip top condition.

How can you make sure your rental car is ready for the winter roads?

Lights – Check all your lights are working including the rear and brake lights. When the skies are murkier, leaving your lights on during the day makes you more visible to other drivers and in many countries is a legal requirement. Fog lights should be used when you cannot see more than 100m in front of you but don’t forget to turn them off when visibility improves.

Windscreen wipers – Ensure these are turned off when you park up for the night. If you don’t, then they may come on automatically the next day when the screen is frozen and be damaged. Take a look at them before you drive off to make sure they are working well enough and, if it is freezing, are not stuck to the windscreen.

Tyres – In cold weather tyre pressure can be lower, check yours before you begin your journey. If you are travelling in winter you may want to hire a car with winter tyres but, if not, snow chains can be essential to avoid getting stuck in deeper snow. Make sure you know how to fit them properly and abide by local regulations.

Fuel – It is recommended to have at least half a tank of fuel before embarking on a journey. If you are going to be driving at high altitudes or in near freezing temperatures, you may need fuel additives. Speak to your car hire company who can advise.

Snow and Ice – Clear your car thoroughly of snow – including the roof. Leave enough time in your travel plans for demisting and de-icing the car. Windscreens can get particularly grimy in the winter so top up screenwash bottles, adding antifreeze if required.

Warning Lights – If any of the warning lights are illuminated, don’t ignore them. If it is not clear what action should be taken, call the rental office to seek help.

What should you keep in your rental car in the winter?

Sunglasses – Not just for the summer! The winter sun can be very low in the sky and glare is a problem for many people. Keep a pair of sunglasses in the car to give your eyes a break.

Ice scraper and de-icer – Windscreens can ice over very fast and having these with you can save you time and effort. Even if you only stop at a service station for a much needed hot drink, you might return to an icy car.

Warm clothing – if you break down or the heating isn’t working, you don’t want to be waiting in the cold. You may be very thankful for an extra layer of clothing or a warm blanket. A pair of thick gloves can also save your hands when you are fitting snowchains.

Drinks and snacks – Journeys can take longer than you expect and traffic delays in winter are common. They can be more bearable if you are not hungry or thirsty.

Mobile phone and chargers – A mobile phone is not just for contacting someone in an emergency, it can also help with alternative routes should there be a blocked road. Many mobile phones have torches too.

Winter driving is all about preparation. Read the weather reports and research your route so you can plan accordingly and leave enough time to reach your destination safely.
