Winter Driving? Our top tips for driving in poor conditions
As the weather conditions here in the UK, across Europe and in North America throw new challenges at us we offer a few tips on keeping yourself safe on the roads this winter.
Whether it's the severe floods here in the UK or the deep snow in the US we think it's really sensible for those heading out on the roads to take a few minutes to consider their journey before setting off.
Firstly preparation:
Head for your car 10 minutes before you want to leave - that will give you time to get the windscreen fully defrosted before setting off. It also leads to a more relaxed drive as you are ahead of any time deadlines.
Plan your journey carefully - Google Maps can help you pick the best route and tells you the estimated journey time bearing in mind current conditions. If the weather is likely to deteriorate, do add more time though.
Take warm clothes, waterproofs, food and drink.
Charge your mobile phone before leaving and take a in-car charger and lead if you have one. Alternatively a extra top up battery can be a good investment.
Check water and antifreeze levels in your car
If it's your first time on icy roads for a while why not refresh your driving skills for the winter - the Which? video below is fill of hints covering driving on snow and ice.
During your journey
Believe road closure signs and don't think you know better! The number of people who ignore them and then get stuck always amazes us!
Don't head off down country lanes if the roads get sticky in bad weather. Keep to major routes as the authorities will divert their resources to these roads first.
Drive steadily, trying not to brake and accelerate.
Let the speed freak behind go past - they are always less likely to hurt you if they are in front of you rather than behind.
